My coaching Philosophy
Pursuing excellence
There are a million different coaches out there but what makes one coach the right one for you? A good coach needs to first and foremost have a deep understanding of the subject/sport. And secondly needs to be able to connect with the person they are coaching.
I have been in sport my entire life! Starting swimming competitively at a young age and then progressing to Triathlon at around 14. In that time I have learned a lot. I have always taken the time to learn why I am doing each session and how that balances with the other sessions in the block to enable me to reach my goals. I have tinkered with my own training, tried all the fads, failed countless times. Having been a professional now for over a decade, I understand what works and why. I don't know it all however, and never will. Which is the fun in it all. We are all learning together, the key is to stay hungry and keep pursuing more knowledge.
I am a big believer in taking the time we need to progress at a sustainable rate, with baby steps, you'll be flying before you know it! When I started Triathlon I was always injured from pushing too hard too often. I have since learned that sometimes more training = less fitness. The key is consistency, and enjoyment.
Now the simple part is putting a program together to get an athlete at level x to achieve y. But that is always only theoretical and often leads to problems. The coaching side is being in communication with the athlete and adjusting week to week and day to day. Stressful day at work? We adapt. Bad nights sleep? We adapt. Other commitments? We adapt. Feeling awesome? We adapt!
This is the key to consistency. The key to enjoyment is always a personal one. But keeping sessions varied, challenging, using friends and clubs to stay social and staying injury free all help!
